Photographic identification review

Evidence for this exact frame

Reviewed hypotheses are preserved separately from the current archive label and from iNaturalist computer vision. They record what the photograph supports, what remains plausible, and what the frame cannot resolve.

Conclusion: Aplysia cf. nigrocincta

Reviewed by Codex identification research on Aug 27, 2026 · 88% reviewer confidence.

Reasoning recorded at review

  • Small, smooth-bodied Aplysia with a large visceral hump
  • Reddish-dark-brown body
  • Pale blue-white edging and tips on the parapodia, rhinophores and oral tentacles
  • Large mantle foramen is not raised into a volcano-like papilla

Alternatives considered

  • Aplysia atromarginata or another former A. parvula-complex lineage

Why plausible: The 2019 revision split the old circumtropical A. parvula concept into ten taxa, several in the Indo-Pacific

Comparison: Mantle-aperture structure, shell, reproductive anatomy and DNA are needed to eliminate the closest lineages conclusively
