Photographic identification review

Evidence for this exact frame

Reviewed hypotheses are preserved separately from the current archive label and from iNaturalist computer vision. They record what the photograph supports, what remains plausible, and what the frame cannot resolve.

Conclusion: Polycera sp. (janjukia-like morphotype)

Reviewed by Codex identification research on Aug 27, 2026 · 90% reviewer confidence.

Reasoning recorded at review

  • Elongate polycerid body with anterior velar processes
  • Exposed posterior gill plume and lateral appendages
  • Pink-purple ground colour with orange spots
  • Numerous additional opaque-white spots distinguish it from the simple published janjukia pattern

Alternatives considered

  • Polycera janjukia

Why plausible: Temperate species shares a pink-purple body with yellow-orange spots

Comparison: Published records place it in New South Wales and Victoria, and the Tawali animal has conspicuous white spotting; specimen comparison and DNA are required

  • Undescribed tropical Polycera

Why plausible: The tropical Indo-Pacific genus is incompletely resolved and the visible morphotype does not cleanly match the temperate name

Comparison: Radula, reproductive anatomy and molecular data are needed

Evidence limits & sources +
  • • No specimen anatomy or DNA
  • • One rhinophore and some velar processes are partly obscured
