Evidence for this exact frame

Reviewed hypotheses are preserved separately from the current archive label and from iNaturalist computer vision. They record what the photograph supports, what remains plausible, and what the frame cannot resolve.

Conclusion: Sagaminopteron multimaculatum

Reviewed by Codex identification research on Aug 27, 2026 · 92% reviewer confidence.

Reasoning recorded at review

  • Bat-wing gastropterid body with very large elongate parapodia
  • Clear to translucent-white body and foot
  • Numerous small canary-yellow spots across the parapodia, head shield and foot
  • Small orange spots and a narrow orange line along the parapodial margins
  • No distinct dorsal flagellum visible

Alternatives considered

  • Sagaminopteron pohnpei

Why plausible: The primary revision identifies this as the closest externally similar congener and both lack a flagellum

Comparison: S. pohnpei is described as brown, orange, red or black rather than this pale yellow-spotted morph; definitive separation uses penial anatomy

  • Gastropteron multo

Why plausible: Another pale bat-winged slug with orange marks

Comparison: G. multo has two flagellar processes, brown/orange patches and an elongate pointed foot, unlike the yellow-spotted no-flagellum combination here
